Advocacy & outreach
Media, PR, political, pastoral and educational resources

In this section ... you'll find tips, templates and tools for publicity and news coverage, dealing with the media, reaching key groups such as church and civic leaders, how to communicate in mass media and how to generate free or low-cost coverage. You'll also find project ideas and an events calendar to help with planning.

Public relations (PR) involves many things, including clarifying your message or narrative, and educating and maintaining good relationships with the general public, the media, and other groups, leaders and audiences. It typically involves raising awareness and communicating your message via unpaid media, driven by press releases, publicity, special events, opinion leaders, etc., leading coverage and "buzz" in news media and elsewhere.

For added impact, PR often works in concert with distribution of supporting materials, such as brochures, flyers or "big picture" educational ads; for example, What Every American Needs to Know, Forced Abortion in America flyer or small ads.

This can be simple, affordable and effective if you stay with it. As with any plan, consistency and repetition are key. It may involve some combination of tools, such as:

> letters to the editor

> press releases
> fact sheets, brochures and flyers sent to group leaders or journalists

speeches, op ed pieces or events, such as hosting a speaker from a post-abortion ministry, pregnancy resource center, or other advocates or experts and using a co-op ad as the invitation.

> media kits delivered to journalists.

It may involve sending timely story ideas to journalists and other media and communications outlets. It may involve sharing educational materials with opinion leaders in civic, religious or other venues.

With a little planning, you can help educate the public about unwanted abortions and other risks and injustices that endanger the rights and lives of both the unborn and women ... in addition to serious post-abortion issues.

Testimonies and quotes from leaders help

Public media outreach is especially effective if you can include local sources or quotes from local individuals or leaders, representatives of organizations or individuals with first-hand experience, or experts willing to be interviewed. For example, this might include representatives of local counseling centers, a local pastor or civic leader, or women, men and families personally hurt by abortion.

What you'll find in this "Advocacy & Outreach" section

This section has many tools, templates and tips for dealing with the media and using mass media communications respectfully and effectively. Plan the quarter or year in advance

Check our calendar - timing leverages your message and media coverage

Don't forget to check our Events Calendar for timely anniversaries and events. Send your message out when issues are already in the media limelight. Events such as Mother's Day, holidays or national health awareness days or weeks are a good segue to important issues. When you time it right, your letter to the editor or other media outreach will be even more effective.

> Scheduling projects at the start of each quarter or year will allow more time to raise funds and plan an effective campaign.

> Use a mix of ads and outreach – such as letter-writing campaigns.

> Events Calendar to leverage your projects with good timing that gets more media coverage. Plan activities during national events, and send news releases to local media.

> Join forces with other like-minded groups for greater impact and joint fundraising, e.g., local counseling centers, civic groups, churches or
